“ My wife and I stopped at La Pena Mexicana for lunch today. The restaurant was small, but the staff is extremely friendly and the service quick and excellent. We had the shrimp tacos and shrimp quesadillas - both of which were well prepared, delicious, and reasonably priced. Although we do not live near Kennett Square, we plan on stopping in for lunch here whenever we pass through the area in the future. ”
“ The food is delicious and authentic Mexican! My family and I loved our food. The staff was friendly except for the young man at the cash register taking orders and serving the food. He was disrespectful and rolled his eyes at us several times when requesting sauces and water. He did not even greet us or make eye contact when ordering. The young man very clearly was not happy. My advice for the business is to have someone else at the register, if they would like customers to keep coming back- as their food is wonderful and the other staff members are great! ”
“ Delicious food & a variety of choices! The owner was so gracious in serving us quickly, however the young man at the front counter had earbuds on & was unpleasant while taking our orders. He acted like he would have been happier if we did not enter the restaurant, rolling his eyes after each order from our family of 5. ”
“ The owner is fantastic and always greets us with a smile and handshake. It's not fancy on the inside but the food is really good. We each there pretty much every week and get the vegetarian tacos and burritos. It comes with cilantro, onions, tomatoes, rice, beans and cheese. We add jalapeños, green salsa, and the secret in my book is the toasted pumpkin seeds which give it all a nice crunch. ”
“ Great local taqueria! I had the Tacos Al Pastor (seasoned pork) and Horchata. The tacos were well seasoned, with a hint of heat. I chose not to add more heat with the red and green sauces that were offered. The Horchata was as good as any I've ever had. Service was efficient in this quaint family restaurant. I missed it the first time I drove by. ”
“ Who knew Mexican food on the East Coast could taste so good!? With murals on the outside and a small, no-frills dining room inside, La Pena Mexicana delivers on excellent food and service. Stopping in around 1 pm on a Saturday in July, my wife, seven-year-old daughter and I got a table right away. Within minutes, our order was being taken and our food coming out shortly after. Each of us really enjoyed our food. My daughter loved the cheese quesadilla, my wife the enchiladas, and I the Tex Mex burrito with carnitas dripping with red sauce. It comes with rice, beans, avocado, and lettuce. The flavors explode in your mouth! ”
“ La Peña Mexicana never disappoints. Just consistently great authentic Mexican food. It's a local go to for us when we're craving Mexican for dinner. ”
“ You HAVE to try this phenomenal, hidden, affordable, hole in the wall in Kennet Square. This small, family run, taqueria has some of the best food I have eaten in my entire life. Every single bite you can tell is lovingly crafted, seasoned, and served with care. You can see in the back and tell that they know what they are doing and they are people that you can trust with your food. We took my very Caucasian in laws here and they gave their tacos two thumbs up. But if you're looking to step outside of your comfort zone, their beef tongue is so beautifully cooked. It's so tender. You can't go wrong here. Do yourself a favor, and eat here, and expand your flavor palette and try something new! ”
“ Perhaps out of all the Mexican joints along the highways and byways I have traveled in life's journey this is my favorite but I never seem to be able to remember it's name. But, you see I am a guy and I can always get you there but perhaps I can't provide really concise directions. And, it is really a good thing that I have never forgotten how to get to this Kennett Square treasure because ever since I found it after walking out of another Kennet Square eatery (That somehow is still in business) friends and family have joined me in enjoying Mexican food at its best! Visit Longwood Gardens head to La Pena!! Checking out Winterthur ... that other DuPont estate ... head to La Pena!! Kennet Square highways are confusing ... La Pena almost looks like a gas station and maybe that's what it once was but it will be on YOUR LEFT and it looks a bit dicey but oh so homey! Time it right and you will find a seat time it wrong and you will wait because there just aren't a lot of tables but waits are worth the time. Definitely not a dress up eatery because you aren't there to show off your finery you are coming to be satisfied. Signage claims that La Pena's best service happens when you order at the counter but I have never received anything less than top rate service at the table. Sometimes the cook even sings as he prepares your meal and that's a bonus! Step into the men's room and you'll laugh at the wall painting. But .... it's not the men's room nor the singing ... not even the service but the authentic tastes of Mexican simplicity that you will discover at prices that will make you wonder if you have gone back in time. Torta's and Tamales; Huaraches and Taco's; and yes burritos, enchiladas, sopes, tostadas, fajitas, and chimichangas too! An amazing array of meat choices although I have not yet made the bold move to choose what appears to be a speciality ... Lengua (look it up haha). Sauces are yummy ... simplicity but filled with careful thought and love delivers time after time! And, even an array of sodas/pops that come from Mexico too. La Pena has been recognized by various media folks too but I am hoping to not forget the name but I know where I am going because there is only one special place like this ... if you are in the neighborhood make plans to stop by and enjoy! ”
